Year 5

CROESO

Welcome to Year 5!

Mr. Aubin - Class Teacher

"Hello everyone, I'm Mr. Aubin, and welcome to our year 5 class page. Here you will find some useful information about what to expect this year and a few things to help you be the best you can be. We have an exciting year ahead of us with some fantastic topics to explore and trip opportunities to look forward to, including our residential trip in the summer."

All pupils should aim to embody these 3 key qualities in  school:

Manners, Respect and Effort.

If you strive to achieve these then you will succeed.

Important Class Information:

Homework:

Every Friday the pupils will develop their spelling skills and be tested on their weekly lists. A new list will be issued every week so please ensure that pupils have an opportunity to practice these at home. Additionally, on a Friday, pupils' mental maths recall and multiplication fluency will be tested. These can be practiced at home using the Sumdog platform.

In addition to this, pupils can access the resources on our class page for individual research and practice concepts covered in class.

Reading:

Children are provided with opportunities to read independently and for pleasure daily in Year 5.

Therefore, your child will be expected to have a reading book in school every day. These can be borrowed from our book corner, a book-banded book, or their own book from home. These books can be kept in their trays at school or brought home if they wish to continue reading in their free time.

P.E:

Our P.E session will be every Monday and Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their P.E kit which should include suitable footwear and comfortable, flexible clothing that can be worn indoors or outdoors.

Drinks Bottles and Snacks:

We are a Healthy School and promote children's continuous access to clean water. Please ensure your child brings in a labeled drink bottle. This is in addition to any water bottles you wish to provide for lunchtime. The children will have continual access to drinking water throughout the day. If they would like to bring their own snack for playtimes, please ensure it is healthy (e.g. fruit, vegetables, or cereal bars).

Our topic this term is:

Summer Term

This term is all about challenging ourselves, strengthening our bodies, and developing even stronger minds. We will look to Paris where this year's Olympics will be hosted to guide us in our learning.  What does it take to achieve our goals? What sacrifices are made? and what impact does it all have on the world around us? We will focus on our geography skills to answer these questions and aim to be ethical and informed learners.

Our Previous Learning

Spring Term

This term we will explore our Welsh identitiy and what it means to be apart of this community. What is Hiraeth and where does it come from? We will look at home grown talents that inspire us and we will climb to the top of the Welsh moutains and sing proudly and passionately of our love for Wales.

When you come from Wales there's a feeling of belonging,
for those that have left for different lands a constant sense of longing.
This longing is called 'hiraeth', only the Welsh can understand,
a yearning for their nation and wonderful homeland.
Hiraeth it exists and indeed it can be strong,
the love for Wales is palpable for the place that you belong.
Often being away from Wales you feel there's something that you lack,
hiraeth is the magnet that wants to draw you back.
Hiraeth, an emotion, not easy to explain,
whenever you leave
the heart does grieve
to be back in Wales again.
It can feel there's something missing, in your life there is a hole,
there's an ache within your heart and a pining in your soul.
No matter how long ago you left, how long you've been apart,
hiraeth is there always and Wales is in your heart.

Autumn Term 2

Wales once used to have a significant impact on the global economy and was a world leader in the coal industry. As industries change, we had to adapt and new ideas and businesses began to rise from the forgotten coal pits. In this topic, pupils will develop their entrepreneurial skills by working with local businesses such as "The Secret Hospitality Group" and "Coaltown Coffee Roasters" and exploring how they have grown their businesses from fledgling ideas to thriving companies. Pupils will have the opportunity to be; creative and enterprising by developing a product for distribution over the Christmas period and Ethical and informed by discussing and taking responsibility for the impact that industry has on local and global communities.
