Coaltown Enterprise

Topic KS2– Coaltown Enterprise 

We will be learning about the coal industry in Wales.  This will enable us to understand the geological, historical and ecological changes in the area.  We will learn about the success of a local company, Coaltown, in Ammanford and forge enterprising links with this company.  In a wider context, we will investigate the properties of rocks and learn about rock formations, tectonic plates, volcanic activity and fossils. 

We will look at the work of two important artists that portrayed the lives of Welsh miners in the 20th century.  One of these artists is Josef Herman, a polish refugee who came to Ystradgynlais for a fortnight and was so inspired by the miners that he stayed and painted them for 11 years!  The other is Nicholas Evans, who was an ex-miner himself.
