'Speedboats' Year 6 2024/25
Hello everyone, I'm Mrs Kuhne and welcome to our Year 6 class page. Here you will find some useful information.
Manners, Respect and Effort are our whole school qualities. We expect these qualities throughout everything we do. If you strive to achieve these then you will succeed in class, in Grange and in your future lives!
Important class information
Homework
Every Monday the pupils will develop their spelling and times table skills and be tested on their weekly lists. A new list will be issued every week so please ensure that pupils have an opportunity to practice these at home.
Reading
Pupils will all be given a reading book at the beginning of the term that is suitable for their ability and appropriate level of challenge. Alongside this pupils have the opportunity to borrow books for pleasurable reading from a wide selection in school as well as from the local library.
Each morning starts with a guided reading carousel, during which all pupils have the opportunity to read with their teacher, develop higher order reading skills, reading with their younger buddies (Reception/Year 1 pupils). Pupils are expected to bring in their reading diary on their 'reading day' to enable regular home/school communication about reading.
Our visits to the Library throughout the year help to develop the love for reading we want all pupils in Grange to have, and encourage the children to get their own library card if possible.
P.E
Our P.E session will be every Monday and Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their P.E kit which should include suitable footwear and comfortable, flexible clothing that can be worn indoors or outdoors.
This term our P.E topics are dance (Monday) and net and wall games (Friday) with an additional focus on Squash! This will end with a visit to the Swansea Tennis and Squash Club to receive a certificate!
Drinks Bottles and Snacks
We are a Healthy School and promote the children having continuous access to clean water. Please ensure your child brings in a labelled drinks bottle. This is in addition to any water bottles you wish to provide for lunchtime. The children will have continual access to drinking water throughout the day. If they would like to bring their own snack for playtimes, please ensure it is healthy (e.g. fruit, vegetables, or cereal bars).
Spring Term 2025 Topic
What if we don't listen to our planet?
This topic introduces pupils to the life and work of Charles Darwin, focusing on his famous voyage aboard the HMS Beagle and the development of his ground-breaking theory of evolution. We will explore Darwin’s journey, the observations he made, and how these ideas transformed our understanding of life on Earth. We hope to inspire curiosity, develop observation skills, and encourage critical thinking about the natural world. From here we will delve into the evoluation of technology in our modern world, exploring how technology has transformed over time, shaping the live, work, and communicate. Pupils will be working with Techno Camps to develop their coding skills and investigate key technological advancements. We will be programming Mircobits and considering how modern innovations are influencing the future.
Autumn Term Topic
Riots and Revolution!
Long ago, before there were cities and cars, Wales was home to the Celts, brave people who lived in small villages and cared deeply for their land. These Celts weren’t just ordinary farmers or builders – they were warriors too! They fought many battles to protect their homes and their way of life.
Sometimes, when people were unhappy with how they were being treated, they would stand up and fight. This could lead to riots – big protests where people demanded change. Other times, these struggles became so important that they turned into revolutions – where everything changed, and new leaders took charge.
Then along came the Romans, who were a powerful group of people from a city called Rome, which is in Italy today. They had a huge army and wanted to take over lots of different lands to make their empire bigger.
The Romans had already taken over much of Britain, so they set their sights on Wales next. They sent their armies into Wales to fight the Celtic tribes and take over their land. Find out how the Welsh Celts fought back.
In Wales, some of the most exciting stories come from these times of battle and bravery. So, get ready to travel back in time and explore the world of Celtic and Roman riots and revolutions!
