Year 4/5 - Windsurfers

Croeso

Welcome to Year 4/5 - we are the Windsurfers!

Mrs Gully - Class Teacher

Mrs M Davies - Classroom Assistant

Hello, everyone!

Welcome to our Year 4/5 class page - we are the Windsurfers!  Here you will find some useful information about what to expect this year, what I expect from you and, most importantly, find out about the topics and activities that we will undertake this year.

Manners, Respect and Effort.

The three qualities we always expect in Grange.

If you strive to achieve these then you will succeed in class, in Grange and in your future lives!

Important class information

Homework:

Every Monday the pupils will develop their spelling and times table skills and be tested on their weekly lists. A new list will be issued every week so please ensure that pupils have an opportunity to practice these at home.

Reading:

Children are provided with opportunities to read independently and for pleasure daily in our class.

Therefore, your child will be expected to have a reading book in school every day. These can be borrowed from our book corner, a book-banded book, or their own book from home. These books can be kept in their lockers at school or brought home if they wish to continue reading in their free time. We will aim to change our reading books weekly, or wen appropriate.

We will also have visits to the Library throughout the year to develop the love for reading we want all pupils in Grange to have, and encourage the children to get their own library card if possible.

P.E

Our P.E sessions will be every Wednesday and Friday.  Please ensure your child comes to school wearing their P.E kit, which should include suitable footwear and comfortable, flexible clothing that can be worn indoors or outdoors.

Drinks Bottles and Snacks:

We are a Healthy School and promote the children having continuous access to clean water. Please ensure your child brings in a labelled drinks bottle. This is in addition to any water bottles you wish to provide for lunchtime. The children will have continual access to drinking water throughout the day. If they would like to bring their own snack for playtimes, please ensure it is healthy (e.g. fruit, vegetables, or cereal bars).

Autumn Term

Riots and Revolution (Local Celts)

Long ago, before there were cities and cars, Wales was home to the Celts, brave people who lived in small villages and cared deeply for their land. These Celts weren’t just ordinary farmers or builders – they were warriors too! They fought many battles to protect their homes and their way of life.

Sometimes, when people were unhappy with how they were being treated, they would stand up and fight. This could lead to riots – big protests where people demanded change. Other times, these struggles became so important that they turned into revolutions – where everything changed, and new leaders took charge.

In Wales, some of the most exciting stories come from these times of battle and bravery. You’ll learn about famous Celtic warriors, the reasons they fought, and how they lived their daily lives. You’ll discover how these battles shaped the Wales we know today, from our mountains to our villages. So, get ready to travel back in time and explore the world of Celtic riots and revolutions!

Spring Term

'What if we don't listen to our planet?'

(Focus - Rainforests)

Rainforests are the oldest ecosystems on Earth and they are home to millions of people, plants and animals.

Tropical rainforests are found near the equator, in South America, Southeast Asia, Africa and the islands in the Pacific Ocean. The enormous amount of rain, coupled with tropical heat, means that the conditions in the rainforest are humid and damp.

We will be exploring the Amazon rainforest and learning about the animals and people that live there.  We will research the impact that deforestation is having on our planet and debating the reasons FOR and AGAINST deforestation.

Temperate rainforests are found along coasts in temperate zones. They are cooler and receive much less rain than tropical ones.

Did you know, the woodland at Caswell is classed as a rainforest? What a wonderful opportunity to investigate and compare differences in weather and climate and creating climate graphs.

We will also find out about different habitats, learn about animal food webs and how animals adapt to suit their surroundings.  We will utilising our technological skills and creating databases about endangered animals and using a variety of software to create a 'soundscape'.

Summer Term

'Look Out, Here I come!' Lights, Camera, Action!

'Lights, Camera, Action' is a fun and engaging topic in which the pupils will research the history of film, explore digital apps that can be used to make films and create movies of their own.

In Science, we will be exploring how electrical circuits work and create 'light up' photo frames.

We will be writing our very own stories and adapting them into screenplays which the pupils will perform.

We will also be writing our own recipes and entering them into The 'Great' Grange Bake Off - who will be our star baker?
